Created at Nagoya University in 2011, Common Ground brought 17 students together to shape approximately 2.5 tons of raw clay through a one-day collaborative workshop. Beginning with the space formed between two hands, participants explored weight, scale, movement, touch, and collective decision-making. The work turned earth into both a shared material and a common ground for learning through direct physical experience.
2011年、名古屋大学で実施された《Common Ground》では、学生17名が約2.5トンの生の粘土を使い、1日をかけて共同制作しました。「二つの手の間に生まれる空間」を出発点に、土の重さや大きさ、身体の動き、触覚、そして共同で判断することを体験しました。作品は、土を共有する素材として、また身体を通して学び合うための「共通の基盤」として捉え直す場となりました。

Shaping the Clay Together / 土を共に形づくる
Participants work directly with clay, building the form through shared physical effort.
参加者が土に直接触れ、共同作業を通して作品の形をつくっていきます。
Collective Construction / 共同制作
Seen from above, the work develops through many hands moving around and contributing to a shared form.
上から見ると、多くの人が形を囲み、それぞれの手を加えながら共同で作品を育てている様子が見えます。
Working Around the Form / 形を囲んで制作する
Participants gather around the clay structure, making the construction process itself a shared space for exchange and participation.
参加者が土の造形を囲み、制作のプロセスそのものが交流と参加の場になっていきます。
Returns to the Ground / 大地へと還る
Left exposed to the elements, the unfired clay gradually cracks, erodes, and returns to the ground.
屋外に残された焼成していない土は、時間とともにひび割れ、風化し、再び大地へと還っていきます。
