EWS は、土・風景・記憶を素材に、地域の人びとと時間をかけて「場そのもの」を育てるアート／デザイン・スタジオです。共同設立者は、 チリ出身のヒメナ・エルゲダとアメリカ出身のスティーブン・ウォード。ヒメナは文部科学省の国費留学生として名古屋芸術大学大学院修士課程を修了し、スティーブンはエバーグリーン州立大学で芸術学士号取得後、信楽陶芸の森のアーティスト・イン・レジデンスに参加しました。二人は日本で出会い、以来25年以上にわたり協働を続けています。本活動は自己資金により運営され、特定非営利活動法人 The Creative Culture Institute のもとで実施されています。
代表作《山の広場® 焼物野外劇場アートセンター》（愛知・美浜／英名：The Mountain Plaza）は、 延べ2,000人のボランティアと16年をかけて実現しました。約60トンの粘土で音響殻を現地成形し、 周囲に 築いたレンガ窯で40日間、摂氏1,200度まで焼成。焼成後に窯を解体し、耐火レンガを段状客席へ再配置することで、制作—解体—再利用の循環を空間構造に組み込みました。開場以降、劇場は里山の風景に溶け込み、季節と呼応しながら育ち続けています。
《ラビリンス・プロジェクト》（大分・姫島）は、採石場跡地を「歩くこと」と「傾聴」から読み替え、迷宮型の野外劇場と生態回復をめざす長期計画です。同地では、ソーシャリー・エンゲイジド・アート として《チェア・プロジェクト—故郷での思い出》や《アイランド・アトラス—私たちの言葉は故郷の 未来—》を展開し、島民の声・記憶・未来像を可視化・共有しています。現在まで4か国を旅してきた《チェア・プロジェクト》では、各地で9～98歳の人びとが椅子に腰かけ、「故郷の思い出」を語り、 その声は展示とQRアーカイブを介して次の土地へ手渡されています。
EWSは、場所に根ざしたシステミックな実践として、協働制作を通じて地域の歴史・生態・暮らしの 声に耳を澄まし、集いと想像の場を生み出すプロセスを活性化しています。
ELGUEDA WARD STUDIO (EWS) is an art and design studio that cultivates place as a living setting over time with local communities, working with earth, landscape, and memory. The co-founders are Ximena Elgueda (Chile) and Steven Ward (USA). Ximena completed her master’s at Nagoya University of the Arts as a Japanese Government scholarship student, and Steven earned a BA in art from The Evergreen State College before joining the Artist-in-Residence program at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. They met in Japan and have collaborated for over twenty-five years. Their work is self-sponsored and undertaken under the auspices of the non-profit organization The Creative Culture Institute.
Its signature work, The Mountain Plaza (Mihama, Aichi), was realized over sixteen years with the help of some 2,000 volunteers. On site, an acoustic shell was shaped from about 60 tons of clay and fired to 1,200 °C for 40 days inside a brick kiln built around it. After firing, the kiln was dismantled and its firebricks were reconfigured as terraced seating, embedding a cycle of making—dismantling—reuse into the architecture. Since opening, the theatre has settled into the satoyama landscape and continues to grow with the seasons.
The Labyrinth Project (Himeshima, Ōita) is a long-term plan to reinterpret a former limestone quarry through walking and deep listening, aiming to create a labyrinthine open-air theatre and to support ecological restoration. There, socially engaged works such as the Chair Project—Memories of Home and ISLAND ATLAS: Mapping a future narrative for our island make residents’ voices, memories, and visions shareable and visible. To date, the Chair Project has traveled to four countries, inviting people aged nine to ninety-eight to speak about their “memories of home”; these recordings are passed to the next place through exhibitions and a QR-based archive.
As a place-rooted, systemic practice, EWS listens closely to the histories, ecologies, and everyday lives of communities through co-creation and activates the processes that cultivate gatherings and imagination.
